Research

The first research method I adopted was conducting a Needs finding study to get a better insight into how users are currently performing the task of leaving their pets at home and carried out a Competitive Analysis to gain insight into users’ issues with platforms like these. I also carried out interviews with a few pet owners, which widened my perspective and allowed me several different problems to work upon.

Problem Insight

We started with gathering insights In the area of time limitation people want to take good care of their pets however face issues due to their busy lifestyle, Since pets are the most loved companions for humans we need to put extra care.

  • Due to hectic routines, Pet owners are unable to keep daily activity track of their pets.

  • Using multiple apps for a pet is very time-consuming and confusing for example users have to use an app for the vet, a different app if a pet is lost, or to keep an activity track.

  • Do not have enough education about a specific animal.

  • Unable to take care of their pet's mental health, since time is not enough to spend with their pets user want pet boarding, trainers, or groomers to keep their pets happy.

Storyboarding and Information Architecture

With all the research methods employed earlier, my teammate and I got together with our lead and came up with a broad structure. So, I decided to work on the information architecture, which allowed me to accurately define all functionalities and flow of the platform.

Sketching & Wireframing

I believe problem-solving and sketching are interlinked in product design — I say this because I sometimes come up with alternate and better solutions in this phase than the research phase. Each iteration taught me something insightful and helped me create a better version next time.

Usability Testing

I believe problem-solving and sketching are interlinked in product design — I say this because I sometimes come up with alternate and better solutions in this phase than the research phase. Each iteration taught me something insightful and helped me create a better version next time.

The testing was followed by Heuristic Evaluation, which allowed me to point out several usability difficulties the users faced while interacting with the platform. Results Obtained were :

  • Unable to understand the difference between points and Wellness Score.

  • Confused in sharing screen regading who to share the data of pets

  • no location screen for user to select the nearby pet point.

Visual Design

Working upon those wireframes and learned from usability testing, We created final designs for PetWorld. Citing inspiration from several different resources — existing platforms such as Waggle, PetBacker, and design projects on Behance and Dribbble.

The project was a great experience, and it’s definitely the most significant design project. I had learned how to challenge some assumptions by using completely new ways to develop insights and not relying only on market research.

Designing an entire world for pet Parent for a completely different demographic than mine was not an easy task. A lot of discovery and mental modelling was required. Designing for 3 different platforms - Mobile, Desktop, Tablet was a great learning experience.
